LITTLE CHECKS, LESS GUESSWORK

What to check between pool-service visits.

Regular servicing works best with a simple plan between visits. You do not need to become an equipment specialist. Knowing what to check, what to record and when to ask for help makes pool ownership easier.

Make the handover specific to your pool

At your next service, ask for the tasks you can safely manage and the ones to leave to a professional. Agree how often to test your water, which readings matter and what to do if they are outside the recommended range. Keep the relevant equipment manuals with that plan.

A clear handover should tell you more than the date of the next visit. Ask what was cleaned, what was added and whether anything needs follow-up. That gives you something useful to compare with changes you notice later.

Use this short checklist

Work through the checks that apply to your system, at the frequency in your care plan. Increase attention when weather or pool use changes.

  • Test the water: use a suitable test kit as directed and record the results. Do not rely on colour or smell alone.
  • Look for debris: skim ordinary leaves and check accessible baskets only using the correct safe procedure.
  • Check the water level: compare it with the operating level specified for your pool and equipment.
  • Notice changes: record unusual sounds, visible leaks, error messages or a different filter-pressure reading.
  • Check access: keep the gate closed, secure toys when not in use and keep the pool barrier clear of climbing aids.

Keep a pool note on your phone

A simple dated list is enough. Record test results, products used, recent heavy rain and any equipment messages. A photo of a display or label can make an enquiry more useful. Keep chemical names and quantities as they appear on the packaging so nobody has to guess what was added.

If several people help with the pool, use the same record. It reduces the chance of repeating a treatment and makes it easier to explain a problem. Ask someone taking over while you are away to follow the agreed plan rather than improvise.

Know when to stop and ask

Keep swimmers out when the pool is green, visibility is poor or contamination is suspected, and obtain suitable advice. Do not open electrical equipment or a filter under pressure. A persistent error, damaged fitting or unusual loss of water needs assessment.

Follow chemical labels and keep products secured in their original containers. Never mix pool chemicals together. If a task is outside your experience or the manufacturer's instructions are unclear, leave it until you have guidance.

Keep maintenance and supervision separate

A recently serviced pool still needs active adult supervision when children are around water. Cleaning, water testing and a locked gate each serve different purposes; none replaces watching children closely.

Pool Legends's routine visits can help with the cleaning and agreed water-care tasks. Use the contact form to describe your current routine and the parts you would like help with.

A few useful answers.

Should I wait until the next visit to report a problem?

Report a significant change when you notice it. If the pool or equipment may be unsafe, keep it out of use while you seek advice.

Can I use the same checklist all year?

Keep the checklist, but review its timing as swimming habits, weather and equipment needs change.
